Quihubo Vicente! Your posts are very nice and thought-provoking but there is one thing I find extremely frustrating: ACRONYMS !!! What the heck means "his KPIs" or "you go to the DMV" ? Even Wikipedia failed to enlighten me...

Thanks for the comment, you're right. I'll definitely include more acronyms explanations...

"KPI" means Key Performance Indicator. It's a system of evaluation used in companies to "monitor your performance". It's pretty much total BS, since Managers just use them as a perfunctory checkbox to pretend they control productivity. My KPIs, for example, can be something like number of articles published per week and traffic driven through the site. So let's say if your baseline KPI is 4 articles per month driving 3K views, your Manager will ask you to increase those "numbers" by next semester. That's kinda the general idea. KPIs sorta work, in certain company settings, but I've seen KPIs by HR (Human Ressources) that are just cooked numbers. HR will send a questionnaire to gauge "employee satisfaction" and then artificially inflate results next semester: employees are 25% more satisfied with the company!", er, no, you just built a closed questionnaire very easy to manipulate and counted whatever you wanted to pretend your KPIs are meaningful...

DMV means "Department of Motor Vehicles", it's where you get your driving license and a running joke for anglophones about a State-run service that is awfully slow and bureaucratic.

Cheers, mi buey!

V.

Vicente, I'm impressed. I met you speaking in French in the office, I discovered your mother tongue is Spanish, and I just discovered how eloquently you write in English! Bravo ;-) really interesting piece, which really resonates. I feel like i'm regularly asking some of the questions you raise... Cheers
